I started out as a writer. After a brief career as a journalist and newspaper editor, I took advantage of a job hiatus to work on fiction, and had my first novel,Dreams of Darkness, published in 2000. I also became a freelance book editor and reviewer, publishing the online review zine The Blue Iris Journal from 1999 to 2003.

In 2002, I signed on as a book editor with Zumaya Publications, then located in British Columbia, quickly moving up the ladder to acquisitions then editor-in-chief and, finally, full partner. My next two books, The Ugly Princess and Shadow of the Scorpion, came out in 2003 and 2004. I also had three erotic romance novellas published by eXtasy Books: "The Loremaster," "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" and "Remembered Glory."

In the process of learning the business side of publishing while juggling my editing and writing careers, I saw a lot of problems with the traditional publishing business model, both economically and environmentally, that disturbed me enough I decided the solution was to develop an alternative one based on print-on-demand and ebooks. It's been an uphill battle against the status quo, but Zumaya Publications, which is now based in Austin TX, has made progress in persuading booksellers and others of the advantages of the new model while garnering a solid reputation for publishing superb fiction in multiple genres and quality nonfiction.

I have the third and final chapter in the Everdark Wars saga in the final production stages; I hope to have The Everdark Gate ready by the end of July. Then I won't have any more excuses for not finishing the half-dozen other books that are perking in the Creativity folder.
